SCYC to Host Open House on October 20th

Living on the shores of The Monterey Bay Sanctuary is a great reason to love boats. The general public is invited to get closer to both the boats and the people that own them on October 20th during the Trees to Sea Harborfest sponsored by The Arana Gulch Watershed Alliance, Friends of the Harbor Group and The Santa Cruz Port District.

The Santa Cruz Yacht Club is supporting The Trees to Sea Harbor Fest on October 20, 2007 by hosting an open house at our clubhouse and boat storage & launching facility. We are located on the west side of the yacht harbor between “C” and “D” docks near the big, blue crane—there will be ample signs to guide the way to our clubhouse. The club will be open to all Harbor Fest visitors from 10:a.m. until 5:p.m..

We’ll have club members present to tell you about our rich history, membership information and exciting programs that include powerboat and sailboat cruises, sailboat racing and some of the best socializing that the harbor has to offer. Our members come in all ages, from many different backgrounds, and include people with sailboats big and small, motorboats, powerboats, kayaks, windsurfers, inflatable dinghies and row boats—or no boats.

The Santa Cruz Yacht Club was founded in 1928 with our first clubhouse located out on the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf. In 1964, the club moved to The Santa Cruz Small Craft Harbor just after it was built. The yacht club has been a part of the harbor since the very beginning.

Our Junior Yacht Club members will have several boats on display near the dry storage yard where we keep the boats on trailers. They would love to tell you about their activities and show you their craft. The yacht club juniors will have refreshments and t-shirts available for sale with the proceeds going to support their sailing programs. We will also have members of our Cruising Committee on-hand to tell you about past and present yacht club cruises.

Even if sailboat racing isn’t your thing, be sure you don’t miss the One-Design sailboats parading down the harbor channel after 3:00p.m.. The yacht club will have an organized Fall One Design Race (identical boats) going on that day so you can also catch them out on the water in front of the harbor. The west jetty offers a great viewing area to catch the racing action—just look for all the beautiful white sails clustered together.

The Santa Cruz Yacht Club is also proud to be able to give back to our community. We sponsor or host a number of major events each year like The Big Brothers and Big Sisters Benefit Regatta, The West Marine Fun Regatta and The Annual Lighted Boat Parade held each December. We also host many National and World Championship sailing regattas. The recent Melges 24 World Championships contributed thousands and thousands of dollars in sales and tax revenues to our community.

Please come by our open house and let us show you what we are all about. For more details you can call us at (831) 425-0690. Santa Cruz Yacht Club 244 Fourth Avenue, Santa Cruz, CA 95062
