Launch Ramp Status Update & Advisory

LAUNCH RAMP STATUS UPDATE & ADVISORY
Date: August 14, 2025
Location: Santa Cruz Harbor Launch Ramp
On June 23, 2025, a substantial sinkhole developed along the north side of the launch ramp, extending approximately 40 feet south. The affected area has been secured with hazard fencing, accurately marking the sinkhole’s boundary. The Port District’s engineering consultant, Mesiti-Miller Engineering, conducted an initial inspection and began developing a long-term repair plan, which is now almost complete.
More recently, on August 12, 2025, significant south-southwest swell activity, measuring 10 feet at a 17-second interval, generated strong surge in the south harbor. During peak high tide, one of the precast concrete panels on the launch ramp was dislodged, forcing the closure of an additional section of the ramp. This damage, combined with the earlier sinkhole, has reduced the number of available launch and retrieval lanes to just one.
In response, emergency engineering and geotechnical assessments remain ongoing, and the Port District is working with the proper regulatory agencies to expedite repairs. While the goal is to restore launch ramp capacity as soon as possible, the complexity of the repair requires a careful and methodical approach.
With salmon season set to resume on September 4, 2025, launch ramp demand will be high. Boaters should expect reduced launch ramp capacity and potential delays, particularly during high-use periods. Boaters are encouraged to plan ahead, arrive early, stage gear in advance, and consider launching during off-peak periods.
We recognize the significant disruption the sinkhole and ramp damage have caused during a busy boating season and appreciate your patience and understanding as we work toward a timely repair.
