Launch Ramp Status Update & Advisory

CONTRACT AWARDED FOR REPAIR

Date: September 30, 2025
Location: Santa Cruz Harbor Launch Ramp

BACKGROUND

On June 23, 2025, a substantial sinkhole developed along the north side of the launch ramp, extending approximately 40 feet south. The affected area has been secured with hazard fencing, accurately marking the sinkhole’s boundary. The Port District’s engineering consultant, Mesiti-Miller Engineering, conducted an initial inspection and began developing a long-term repair plan, which is now complete.

On August 12, 2025, significant south-southwest swell activity, measuring 10 feet at a 17-second interval, generated strong surge in the south harbor. During peak high tide, one of the precast concrete panels on the launch ramp was dislodged, forcing the closure of an additional section of the ramp. This damage, combined with the earlier sinkhole, has significantly reduced the number of available launch and retrieval lanes.

RESPONSE

To advance necessary repairs and address the unanticipated infrastructure damage at the launch ramp, the Santa Cruz Port Commission recently awarded contracts totaling $924,000 to Granite Construction. Work will be scheduled around favorable tide conditions and will include demolition of existing facilities, as needed, to access the sinkhole, placement of controlled low-strength material to fill and stabilize the void, and construction of a below-grade cutoff wall to prevent future scour and erosion. Following stabilization, improvements will include reconstruction of the concrete slab-on-grade approach apron, restoration of adjacent asphalt paving, and repair of affected utilities. Additional notices will be issued once construction commencement is scheduled.

IMPACTS

Currently, launch ramp capacity remains significantly reduced, with just two available lanes. Boaters should anticipate congestion and potential delays during peak periods. All users are encouraged to:

  • Plan ahead and allow extra time for launching and retrieval.
  • Ensure that your vehicle and trailer are occupying one lane only.
  • Stage gear in advance to streamline ramp use.
  • Consider launching during off-peak hours when possible.
  • Be patient and courteous to fellow boaters and staff.

The Port District appreciates your patience and cooperation during this time. We recognize the inconvenience this damage has caused and remain committed to restoring full launch ramp capacity as quickly as possible.
