Murray Street Bridge Seismic Retrofit and Barrier Replacement Project Update – October 2, 2025

As part of the City of Santa Cruz’s Murray Street Bridge Seismic Retrofit and Barrier Replacement Project, the City’s contractor, Shimmick Construction (or its designated subcontractor), will be performing underground utility work along Lake Avenue at the first entrance into the harbor (near Johnny’s Harborside Restaurant and the Boatyard).

Phase 1 work, consisting of test excavation and potholing, began the week of August 25, 2025. Phase 2 work, consisting of more extensive underground utility construction, is scheduled to commence on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, and continue through Friday, October 17, 2025.

During Phase 2, access to harbor businesses will be maintained, but the first entrance into the harbor from Lake Avenue will be impacted. Temporary traffic control measures will be implemented by the City’s contractor in accordance with the attached plan and will include:

  • Temporary lane closures between 8 AM and 5 PM.
  •  Access to harbor businesses will be maintained, but may be detoured to alternate entrances along Lake Avenue.
  • All temporary signs and equipment will be removed from the street at the end of each workday.
  • Safety measures for cyclists and pedestrians will be provided.

The Port District will continue coordinating with the City and its contractor to minimize impacts to harbor access and operations. We appreciate your patience and understanding as the City moves this important infrastructure project forward
