Santa Cruz Port District is seeking qualified internal candidates for the regular, full-time position of Supervising Harbor Dredge Worker. This promotional recruitment is only open to current employees for whom the open position is a promotion (i.e., employees who are currently employed in a position with a salary grade designation of 24 or less).

- Under general supervision, the Supervising Harbor Dredge Worker supervises and trains staff; operates hydraulic / suction dredge and associated equipment to maintain safe passage depth through the harbor entrance channel and within inner harbor; maintains and repairs motors and engines, and mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical systems on the dredge.
- Supervises the daily activities of assigned staff; deploys staff and monitors work, develops staff skills, and evaluates performance; meets regularly with staff to discuss and resolve workload and technical issues; trains staff on work methods, procedures, and techniques.
- Maintains logs and records of work performed; maintenance and repairs of harbor facilities and vessels; assures compliance with environmental and safety regulations, Port District rules and regulations, and applicable U.S. Coast Guard regulations.
- Monitors work sites to verify that the work zone and all equipment are in safe operating condition and assure that safety rules and regulations are followed.
- Successful candidates must be able to lift and use heavy tools and equipment; work effectively and courteously with the public, outside agencies, and coworkers; work independently and as part of a team; and make appropriate decisions based on work experience and training.
Education and Experience
High School Diploma or GED equivalent; AND seven years of experience in heavy equipment operations; OR an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Marine operations experience is required.
License & Certification Requirements
A valid California State Driver’s License is required. A minimum of two additional technical training and certification(s) are required, e.g. certification as a Crane Operator, Welder, SCUBA Diver, Electrician, Plumber and/or other specialties as approved by the Port District.
Compensation and Benefits
The starting salary range for this position is $6,405 to $8,584 per month, depending on qualifications.
The Port District offers full benefits which include:
