Winter Weather Preparations

Release Date: October 8, 2026
Location: Santa Cruz Harbor

With winter approaching and El Niño drawing increased attention, the Port District is taking a proactive approach to seasonal preparations. Staff are working diligently to ensure harbor facilities, equipment, and response plans are ready for winter weather.

While the El Niño outlook provides a broad indication of potential seasonal conditions, a clearer understanding of approaching weather systems will emerge as they come within the two-week outlook, with more specific details available closer to each event. The Port District is closely monitoring NOAA’s outlooks and local forecasts and will continue to do so throughout the winter.

Slip renters will be notified of forecast weather events that have the potential to impact the harbor, including recommended precautions or actions needed to prepare. The Port District’s focus is on completing preparations now and adapting its response as forecasts provide more reliable information.

In the meantime, please take the usual steps to prepare your vessel for winter by replacing worn dock lines, checking bilge pumps and batteries, clearing scupper drains, and securing loose gear.

Thank you for helping prepare the harbor for a safe winter season.
